What Is Walsall Eyes?

Walsall Eyes is a campaigning and support group run for and by the visually impaired people of Walsall.

We are an entirely volunteer led Charity and rely on our dedicated team of volunteers and loyal supporters.

Our aim is to improve the quality of life of all people from Walsall and the surrounding areas through better access to support, companionship and leisure and social activities. We are also passionate about campaigning and working with local organisations to improve the opportunities of our members within Walsall and the surrounding areas, as well as the experiences that they face when accessing local services.

As our Previous Achievements will illustrate, we have had a rich history of over 20 years of making lasting changes for people with a visual impairment within the Walsall borough.

Particular areas of interest for us include:

IT Training

A big part of our offering is our Tea And Tech service - a joint venture with Walsall Society for the Blind. This is a bi-weekly meeting where you can share your experiences and learn about advances in access technology. Whether you are brand new to smart phones and tablets or a seasoned veteran, we are sure the group will provide a mutually supportive environment for everyone to learn together.

Transport

Public transport and private hire vehicles pose many barriers for people with a visual impairment, with changes to services often made at short notice and with poor communication to our community. Through our links to local companies and organisations, we hope to share information as quickly and widely as we can with our members through a variety of formats.

Information

For a person with a visual impairment, nothing is more crucial than access to information. Whether it is digitally, over the phone or in person, our group believe in supporting each other and sharing information on anything and everything. So, whether you want updates on transport, the latest news or where to buy a new computer, our members are always willing to help.

Personal Safety

It is an unfortunate truth that as people with a disability, we are naturally more vulnerable to accidents or exploitation both at home and out and about. Through our links to the police, fire service and other organisations, we are able to support our members in this area through raising awareness and also through visits from external speakers who can provide vital information and training.

Education and Employment

In both of these fields, people with a visual impairment are often under represented. However, our members and directors include people within both active employment and education and we hope that we can provide support and information from these people who are willing to act as advocates and role models.

Our Meetings

At our meetings, we provide accessible information and updates on education, leisure and social activities for those visually impaired people who find it difficult to cope with their disability.

Our directors will also provide updates of interest on the charity, upcoming events and news from the wider visually impaired community.

We regularly have an invited speaker at our bi-monthly meetings and all who would like to come are welcome to attend, where you will receive a warm welcome and light refreshments

We welcome and encourage all who are interested to attend our meetings and see what were about - you can find us at:

Social Events

One of the corner stones of our charity is the belief that our members should have equal access to great company and fun days and nights out - this is why we are constantly working to organise and often fund social events for our members.

Our social activities often include Meals out, Theatre visits, Quiz nights and day trips and if you would like to find more information, please keep an eye on our website and on our socials.
